Tablets are one of the fastest growing markets in the tech world, and they could become a source of increased sales for the retail industry. In 2011, 67 million tablets were sold worldwide, according to Transparency Marketing Research, and that number is expected to reach 248.6 million by 2015.

This is good news for retailers, since tablet use can lead to ecommerce growth. A Nielson Consulting study surveyed 1,762 mobile device owners and found that tablet users were more likely to click on ads and make purchases through online payment processing.

The study found that tablet users respond better to advertisements on their mobile devices than smartphone users. Of those surveyed, 10 percent of tablet owners and only 7 percent of smartphone users reported purchasing products as the direct result of content they came across while shopping online with the device.

Analysts say that the tablet's larger screen encourages customers to engage in advertising and interact with products. Nearly half of tablet owners remember ads they've seen on their mobile device, while just 37 percent of smartphones users say the same. Businesses can gear marketing efforts to reach consumers using tablets and optimize online payment tools for the device to increase sales.
